"Assembled by a host of underground musicians (and pals) from the hills of New Mexico, this radio play-type outing is at once funny and lightly surreal, recalling productions like Matthew Thurber's Ambergis project or the WBAI radio show Poisoned Arts...produc[ing] similarly pleasant and off-centre results. Of course, as with all such things, the higher you are the better it sounds. But it's up to the listener to adjust that particular dial." -Byron Coley, The Wire, Issue 503/504, Jan/Feb 2026
In 1978, Joanne Kyger wrote the radio drama Bolinas Soap Opera for WRFB Radio Free Bolinas. Founded by Michael Rafferty of the Bolinas Hearsay News (and the town's local butcher), pirate radio station WRFB barely broadcast less than a mile across the span of the Bolinas Mesa before it was shut down by the FCC. The station format included pop music, comedy albums, and on-air prank telephone calls from a pay phone installed in the studio.
Set amongst local landmarks Smiley’s Saloon and the Bolinas Community Public Utilities District, Kyger's Bolinas Soap Opera follows the lives, loves, and paranormal adventures of the residents of Bolinas (a "psychedelic Peyton Place") as it experiences troubling visitations by a seductive extraterrestrial.
PRROBLEM now reimagines Kyger's forgotten radio drama in a new adaption—LIQUID ADJUSTMENT: Santa Fe Soap Opera—featuring voice talents and sound effects by PRROBLEM press friends.
